ETTORE SPALLETTI @ MARIAN GOODMAN GALLERY LONDON

Marian Goodman Gallery London presents Every dawn, is first: its first exhibition by Ettore Spalletti, combining recent and important earlier paintings, sculpture and works on paper in an encompassing yet atemporal installation that permeates and subtly alters the gallery’s interior architecture.
Spalletti presents a series of multi-panel paintings in azure blue. Some torque away from the wall, reaching into the room and saturating it with colour, which itself becomes both physical and structural. Each work balances a gently insistent presence with an ethereal materiality. The main upper gallery displays his most recent paintings, including the multi-panel Passeggio works that recall the sea and landscape views from around his studio in Abruzzo, on the Italian Adriatic Coast. A levitating blue field, supporting an ovoid alabaster sculpture, fills the adjacent upper side gallery as a site-specific installation.

LINES & DOTS BY GOULA/FIGUERA STUDIO

The first product in the Home Adventures collection by Goula/Figuera Studio, called Lines & Dots, is a suspended light fitting.

“decorative illumination is the field of design that gives more freedom to shape and which, as a consequence, is much closer to the world of art”

In the case of Lines & Dots this reality goes one step further: light, a key element, relinquishesall its importance to the material, the metal, in this particular case working as would a sculptor.

DOUBT BY CARSTEN HOLLER @ HANGAR BICOCCA

On April 6 Pirelli HangarBicocca will open Doubt, Carsten Höller’s solo exhibition. His work summons upon different states of mind: joy, illusion, and of course, “doubt”, which opens the door to new ways of perceiving reality. The exhibition, curated by Vicente Todolí, includes more than twenty large-scale works, both existent and new, aligned alongthe middle axis of the space. This alignment of works forms a central dividing wall, where visitors will see/experience only half of a given work, and have to remember the half they have seen until they encounter the other half on the other side. Large-scale installations, videos and photographs play with the spatial and temporal coordinates of the exhibition venue, charting a course between symmetry, duplication and reversal.

KARLA BLACK @ DAVID ZWIRNER NY

Combining traditional artistic materials such as chalk, paper, paint, and plaster with everyday items including eye shadow, earth, ribbon, toilet paper, and cotton wool, Karla Black’s works at David Zwirner Gallery in New York are at once elaborate and simple, expressive and restrained. They challenge their own medium by being “almost” or “only just” objects with a close affinity to painting, performance art, and installation. As the artist notes, the “most important thing about the work is that it prioritizes material experience over language as a way to learn about and understand the world.”

The dough is then eaten hot while the lemon leaf is being thrown away.

In the white room of Palazzo Mocenigo, until the 10th of April 2016, The Alchemy of Colour: a “journey” through the different natural dying techniques of textiles.
