A SHORT INTERVIEW WITH PEDRO LUIS

I AM...
a realistic optimist who still believes in doing what I love and what I believe in, while balancing the things I need to do to make a living in this world.
I’m a Brazilian textile artist and designer. I was named Pedro Luis after my great-grandfather. I’m 37 years old and based in Rio de Janeiro.

I DO...
I create things I’ve never seen before, I call it “materializing feelings.” Sometimes it’s literal, sometimes it’s not. I usually do it using thread, needles, and fabric, but I also work with digital media and more traditional tools like pen and pencil.

CHILDHOOD TO ME..
was a very special time in my life, which I remember with great affection. It’s something I still carry with me in my artwork and in the way I live my life.

IMAGINATION TO ME IS...

one of the most important things in my life. As an artist, I’m a very imaginative person. I think so much, much faster than my hands are able to materialize all my ideas and desires. Life feels bigger in my mind.

MY FAVOURITE OBJECT IS...
I’d love to give a poetic answer, like a pencil, as the simplest way to bring my ideas into the world. Or a plane, which can take us quickly to new places.
But honestly, it’s my phone. I’m using it right now to answer these questions. I use it to take pictures of everything that inspires me, to write notes, to stay in touch with my family and friends, and to share my work. I can’t deny it — I’m a big fan of the 21st century and modernity.

MY FAVOURITE COLOUR IS...
the hardest question to answer, because it changes depending on the place, object, or feeling. But I tend to say red. I discovered my passion for it while developing my own artistic language, and how much emotion and intensity I can express with a single color.

MY FAVOURITE 3 IG PROFILES
my friend @zangadas_tatu, who is a very imaginative artist;
my beloved @sorvetinhocomtil, who creates unique and unexpected ice cream flavors;
and since I’m a huge fan of Carnaval, I’d also say @riocarnaval.
